This workshop will be an exploration of Louis Dumonts claim that individualism prefigures man of Western thoughts ethical, political, and scientific conclusions. Presentations can be critical examinations of Dumonts work or discussions of questions arising out of it. For example, was Europes secular trajectory a result of individualism? Can secularism survive without individualism? Is it possible, that is, to foster more collective interpretations of our identiry based on shared secular values? Or does overcoming social atomism require something like a religious dimension?
